Java is set to 8 GB (out of 32GB), but it's not a memory issue because task manager says only ~3.5 GB are in use by Minecraft Launcher. Luckily, Ctrl+Alt+Del still works, and from there I can put the computer to sleep, then wake it up, which brings me safely to the desktop screen, allowing me to kill Minecraft Launcher with the task manager. I have to kill Minecraft with task manager because if I return to the game and try to exit normally I'm stuck in Minecraft and cannot successfully alt+tab to freedom. (It's not using all cores, but the ones that it is using are being floored.) I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the task manager, which explicitly shows that "Minecraft Launcher" is taking over 50% of the CPU. Everything starts fine, but within a minute or two the framerate drops and drops and drops until the game is under 1 fps. The game has gone from 60 fps to basically frozen with the new launcher.
